-With World Migratory Bird Day happening tomorrow, the Nature Conservancy of Canada has been gifted with a forested land site near Wetaskiwin.
The Dr. Thomas S. & Mary Wilson Nature Preserve is a 160-acre property that’s been donated by their son Tom, in their memory.
The Nature Conservancy says it contains critical habitats for migratory birds and refuge for other animals, including black bears, moose and white-tailed deer.
Notable species previously identified in the project area include Western Toad, a species classified as sensitive in Alberta and listed as Special Concern under Canada’s Species At Risk Act (SARA), as well as the common garter snake, which are designated as sensitive in Alberta.
This stunning landscape also plays a crucial role in local watershed protection. Zoned under the County of Wetaskiwin land use plan as a Watershed Protection District, small streams and natural vegetation on the property contribute to flood mitigation and protection of water quality.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Wilson family for their extraordinary generosity and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.
NCC also acknowledges Environment and Climate Change Canada who provided project funding through the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, part of Canada’s Nature Fund.
Quotes
“My mom and dad really loved this property. They walked around it and enjoyed looking at all the plants and wildlife living there. Both my parents would be very pleased to know NCC will be taking care of this place that was so special to them.” – Tom Wilson, land donor
“The Wilson’s generous gift reminds us that conservation is a shared responsibility – one that requires commitment, dedication and a deep love for the land. As the new stewards of this property, we’re honored to carry forward their vision of conserving it for generations to come.” –Tom Lynch-Staunton, Regional Vice-President, Nature Conservancy of Canada
