-Edmonton police have laid charges in six incidents they believe were motivated by hate.
Police say there have been 23 reported incidents so far this year, and they want people to understand that kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

On Feb. 28, 2022, at approximately 7:15 p.m., a South Asian man who was wearing a turban was waiting on the Southgate LRT platform when the accused, who was unknown to the complainant, reportedly approached the complainant and spat on him, making racial comments. When the complainant attempted to follow the accused as he called police, the accused came toward the complainant again, threatening to punch the complainant.
Andrew Antonius Debrouwer, 34, of Edmonton was charged with two counts of assault.
On Mar. 1, 2022, at approximately 4 a.m., a 17-year-old male was in the drive-through at a north Edmonton restaurant. The youth reportedly made racial comments and spit on two staff members, one of whom was Black and one of whom was Southeast Asian. The male youth was charged with two counts of assault. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, he cannot be named.
On Apr. 2, 2022, at approximately 4:40 p.m., a Black female and a white male were walking with their infant in a stroller in the McCauley area. The accused reportedly began uttering racial slurs at the couple, eventually pointing a firearm toward them. The couple fled the area, but witnessed the accused driving around the neighbourhood. EPS Tactical Unit responded, and the accused surrendered to police without incident. A search warrant on the residence found the gun to be a replica firearm.
A 39 year-old male was charged with two counts each of criminal harassment, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, use imitation firearm while committing an indicatable offence, as well as one count of possess offensive weapon dangerous to public. The accused has since passed away, and will therefore not be named.
On Apr. 14, 2022 at approximately 7:39 p.m., a Black male was walking in the 118 Avenue area when the accused, who was unknown to him, reportedly walked up to him, swore at him and then punched him before leaving the area.
Then on Apr. 17, 2022, at approximately 1:50 p.m., a Black male was walking in the same area when the accused, who was again unknown to the complainant, reportedly pushed him to the ground, punching and kicking him. Passers-by stopped their vehicles and chased away the accused.
On Apr. 17, 2022, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a Black male was in the same area when the accused, who was once again unknown to the complainant, reportedly walked up to the complainant and without any warning, struck the complainant on the head with a pipe. The accused was arrested a short distance away.
Gabriel Dale Cardinal, 46, was charged in relation to all three incidents with assault (x2), assault with a weapon, criminal harassment, possession of an offensive weapon and one breach of condition.
