Mondays & Fridays: 2:15pm

Veteran Edmonton Sun journalist, author and comedian, Cam Tait, lives with cerebral palsy and has overcome great odds to live independently and work full time. Technology has finally caught up to Cam’s imagination, speaking fluently for him so we can open up the Gifts of Disability twice a week on the air with CFCW.

-Smoky Lake RCMP are investigating, but believe a deadly collision on Highway 28 this morning was the result of impaired driving.
They say an SUV ran a stop sign at Range Road 130 and collided with a car.
A 39-year old Cold Lake woman driving the car died at the scene, while a 36-year old man from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan died later in the hospital.
Mounties say the person who’d been driving the SUV is currently in the hospital in life-threatening condition, while others who’d been in the vehicle wound up with a range of injuries.

*********************
-Boyle RCMP are working to determine the cause of a crash on Highway 63 north yesterday afternoon.
It happened at Township Road 712, when a car hit the back of a semi.
The woman driving the car died at the scene, while the truck driver was treated for minor injuries.

*******************
-Police are hoping someone might have footage, following the suspicious death of a man in north-central Edmonton yesterday morning.
They found the badly injured victim at 127th Avenue and 118th Street around 3:30am.
He was sent to the hospital, but died from his injuries.
Police are asking people to check their home security systems.

********************
-4-H Canada has been forced to carry out an “organizational reset”, following a major cut in funding from Ag-Canada.
Interim CEO Hugh Maynard says they were forced to lay off seven staff members as a result of a 35-percent chop.
So far it hasn’t affected programming, but he says it will eventually.
He also says it may not long before they may be forced to reduce communications and complimentary programming.
He says they’re going to look at ways to expand partnerships in both the private and public sector, to keep forging ahead.

-Strathcona County is hosting the International Association of Firefighters this week.
They’re getting even more specialized training in fighting wildfires that burn where communities meet grasslands and forests, since those regions need a different approach and tools than blazes in cities.

*******************
-The city of Edmonton tossed a bunch of property tax notices in the mail this week.
An average home worth about 428-thousand dollars is going to pay more than 43-hundred dollars, after the city decided to hike property taxes by 8.9-percent.
They’re due at the end of June, but many residents opt for payment plans.

*****************
-St. Albert’s Downtown Business Association is hoping something will be done to fill commercial properties in that city’s core.
Officials with the group don’t want to go the same route as many other communities that have set up vacancy taxes, which kick in when buildings are boarded up for too long.
The vacancy rate for commercial buildings and office space in downtown St. Albert is about 7.44-percent right now.

*********************
-There’s been a lot of talk lately about setting up a transitional housing facility for young people in St. Albert.
The idea is already in Phase 2, where the city is going to look at a number of proposals.
Transitional housing would provide homeless young people with a place to stay while they’re set up with social supports, as they try to get into more permanent housing.

**********************
-Probably not a big surprise given the cost of everything, but a new report says more and more Canadians are only making a minimum payment on their credit cards these days.
Trans-Union Canada says millenials have the biggest share of the overall debt, but Gen Z saw their credit card and personal loan balances jump by about 30-percent since last year.

*********************
*********************
-When the Oilers burst out of the chute in the first period last night, it really looked like they were intent on winning.
Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid even had them leading 2-nothing going into the second..
But for some reason, the wheels fell off, and the Stars came from behind to win the game 5-3.
So the Stars are now leading the Western Conference Final 2-games to 1 and Game 4 is tomorrow night at Rogers Place.

-Jays beat the WhiteSox 5-1 yesterday.

TODAY/TONIGHT:

-The Eastern Conference Final continues this evening, as the Rangers are leading the Panthers 2-1 in that series. Puck drops at 6.

-Jays have another game against the White Sox at 5:40pm.

********************

-ASIRT is investigating, following a police officer related shooting at a gas station in northeast Edmonton Saturday night.
The officer called for help after running into a man with a weapon at the entrance to the building, there was a confrontation, and the officer fired their weapon.
The suspect wound up with life-threatening injuries, and is still in the hospital.

*****************
-Wainwright RCMP are hoping the public can help them in their investigation, after someone took off with a safe from the ATB in the village of Chauvin early last Friday morning.
Mounties say a stolen Ford F350 was used to damage the building.
But while criminals managed to get the safe out of the place, it was found just down the road with all the money still inside.
The truck was found abandoned south of Chauvin, where the suspects were apparently picked up by a brown Dodge Ram.
Mounties say if anyone has footage of the area near the bank at the time of the break-in, they would like to hear from them.

*****************
-The people of Fort Nelson and the nearby First Nation were allowed to head back home this morning, a few weeks after they were forced out by two massive wildfires.
Rob Fraser is the Mayor of the RM of Northern Rockies, and says evacuation alerts are going to remain in place, in the event people need to leave again.
The fires destroyed four homes and badly damaged a few others.

***************

-The death toll from those powerful storms in the American South keeps rising, as officials have now confirmed at least twenty people lost their lives when a series of tornadoes rolled through this past weekend.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee-Sanders says the devastation is terrible.

****************
-A boil water advisory that had been implemented for the town of Millet Friday afternoon was lifted Sunday.
A broken water-main forced the town to shut off the water, and once it was back on again, people were asked to boil all water for at least a minute before using it for drinking or washing food.

*****************

-The University of Calgary says it’s going to restart its oil and gas engineering program in the fall of next year.
Consistently low oil prices and mass layoffs in the energy sector led the university to stop admitting students to the program in 2021.
But since that time, University officials say oil prices have come back and energy companies are making money again.

*****************
-Lloydminster will be holding its Streetfest again next month.

-The truck driver who caused the crash that killed several members of the Humboldt Broncos, staff and their bus driver in April of 2018 has been ordered deported.
Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is from India, and is a permanent resident in Canada.
He had been granted parole after being sentenced to eight years for dangerous driving in the case.
His lawyer says deportation could still take months or possibly years.

***********************

-A Leduc industrial painting and coating company will have to pay a 350-thousand dollar fine, after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker.
It stems from an incident in October of 2021, when a worker died after being hit by a section of pipe that fell off a loader.
Thirteen other charges were withdrawn.

**********************

-Last weekend was a busy one for RCMP in the province, as they say they got 173 impaired drivers off the road.
That was through more than thirty check-stops.
Mounties say the consequences for impaired driving can vary from a 90-day suspension, losing your vehicle for thirty days, a 1-thousand dollar fine, a criminal record, and a year of mandatory ignition interlock.

*************************

-More than 12-hundred traffic tickets were handed out during last Thursday’s “Operation 24-Hours” in the city of Edmonton.
Police say most of the violations were for speeding, although some involved running red lights, moving violations and distracted driving.
In one case, police say they clocked a car doing 159km an hour in an 80 zone on the Whitemud.
The driver got a mandatory day in court.

**********************

-The parent company of Sobeys says a Competition Bureau investigation of alleged anti-competitive conduct is “unlawful.”
The Bureau says it stands to reason the use of property-controls puts a limit on grocery competition, and that’s why it’s launched the probe into Empire and Loblaw.
A spokesperson for Loblaw says restrictive agreements are very common in many industries, not just the grocery sector.
Under that practice, lease agreements can be set up to spell out who the landowner can lease to, and even which products can be sold.

****************************
-The provincial government tabled an amendment to Bill 20 yesterday.
The bill is the one that would grant the province sweeping powers over municipalities.
The proposed change would require the province to order a vote for any councillor to be recalled.
But the Municipal Affairs Critic says there are still a lot of concerns that aren’t being addressed, and that people have made it clear they don’t want councils and schoolboards flying partisan banners.

************************
-The federal Health Minister says they’re open to adding more medications to the list of drugs in its proposed pharmacare program.
Mark Holland says right now, that list is the absolute minimum, but they’d be willing to add to it, depending on talks with provinces.
Holland made the comments after the Tory Health Critic wanted to know why anti-diabetic drugs such as Ozempic aren’t included.

****************************
-The cooler and rainy weather we’ve been having has made a huge difference in the threat from wildfires, especially when compared with this time last year.
At this point in 2023, more than 52-hundred square kilometres had burned in Alberta.
So far this year, it’s around 290-square kilometres.
But Forestry Minister Todd Loewen says things can change very quickly, so he’s asking that everyone remain vigilant.

***************************
-Officials with London Drugs say cyber-criminals who’ve been demanding ransom for stolen files from the company, have released some of it.
But the company says unfortunately, some of the files may contain employee information.
They say it’s a distressing situation.

**************************
-Strathcona County RCMP arrested two boys, following a bear-spray incident at Salisbury Composite High School Thursday morning.
Mounties say there had been a scrap with another student, and someone blasted the spray, to the point where the victim had to be treated by paramedics.
No one else was injured.

***********************
-Edmonton police have charged a 40-year old man, in connection with the homicide of a 15-year old boy on Tuesday.
The boy’s mother says they’d been walking their dog along 137th Avenue and 184th Street, when they ran into a man they were familiar with, and she says he attacked her son.
Despite life-saving measures by paramedics and police, the boy died at the scene, while the suspect was arrested, and has now been charged with 2nd degree murder.
The boy’s mother has said she believes the matter was related to the man’s mental health.

***************************
-There was a garage explosion in Red Deer Wednesday afternoon.
RCMP say it happened in the Bower neighbourhood, and it’s believed to be accidental, as someone had been using a welding torch near an open gas tank.
Fortunately, no one was hurt.

*****************************
-Slave Lake RCMP have charged a 41-year old Calling Lake man, following a report that a man exposed himself to a schoolbus full of elementary students this past Tuesday afternoon.
Mounties say they were able to arrest a suspect not long after getting a call about the incident.
He’s due in court May 29th.

******************************
-Edmonton’s Hansen Distillery has come up with a non-dairy liqueur, thanks to some help from NAIT’s Centre for Culinary Innovation.
The owners of Hansen say they had a number of people asking for a non-dairy option, so they wanted to see what they could come up with that not only tasted good, but was nice and creamy as well.
It took a few tries, as they say the first batch was like gum.
They say their Oat Milk Cream Liqueur features all local ingredients.

-Connor McDavid scored just 32-seconds into double-overtime last night, as the Oilers beat the Stars 3-2 in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.
He says it felt good to get the game winner on a nice pass from Evan Bouchard.
Zach Hyman and Leon Draisaitl had the other markers, while Stuart Skinner was a machine in net, especially as the Oilers had to fight off a 4-minute penalty in the first overtime, when McDavid was called for high-sticking.
Game 2 is tomorrow night, they’re still in Dallas and it gets underway at 6pm.

Jays hit the Tigers 9-1 last night.

-A 15-year old boy from St. Albert is dead after his mother says he was attacked while they were out walking Tuesday evening along 137th Avenue and 184th Street.
She says they had run into a man they were familiar with, and she says he stabbed her son, in what she believes was some kind of mental health episode.
The victim has been identified through Facebook as a Grade 9 student from Lorne Akins Junior High in St. Albert.

*****************
-Edmonton police have charged a man and woman with 2nd degree murder, following the death of a 64-year old man last weekend.
Police had been called to a home on 135-A Avenue and 68th Street, where the man’s body was found.
The victim has been identified as Brian Rud, but police aren’t saying how he died, so they don’t impede the investigation.
A 32-year old man and 24-year old woman have been charged in the case.

*****************
-The federal Tory Ag Critic says the Liberal government has delivered a slap in the face to Canadian youth, after approving cuts to 4-H Canada this year.
John Barlow says it’s a continuation of a nine-year attack on farmers and producers, because instead of celebrating the organization in it’s 111th year, the feds are snubbing the ag industry.
Barlow says the 4-H program not only plays a significant role in agriculture, but in positive youth development, by helping kids work on important life skills, such as public speaking, leadership, responsibility and hard work.

*******************
-The rain and cooler weather has led to a drop in the wildfire danger in the province.
As of Wednesday night, there are 32 active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area.
None are out of control, three are being held and the rest are under control.

*****************
-There’s already been a lot of severe weather in the U-S this spring, as softball sized hailstones, flooding rains and incredibly powerful tornadoes have torn through the Midwest and south.
And now, hurricane forecasters say it’s going to be a busy season for those storms as well.
They say up to 25 storms could be named this year, with four to seven of them becoming major hurricanes.

********************
-WestJet is coming out with a new fare category for travellers who are willing to go without a carry-on bag.
People who choose that fare won’t be able to use the overhead bins, but they can store a purse or small knapsack under the seat in front of them.
WestJet recently introduced an extended comfort category, which gives passengers preferential access to overhead bins and other things, for a price.

******************
-AUPE says the company that runs the Devonshire Care Centre in Edmonton has cut the hours for all its full-time healthcare aides.
AUPE officials say those hours have been chopped nearly in half, which means not only are they losing wages, but critical benefits.
And they say centre residents are going to suffer, because the aides won’t be able to spend as much time with them.
There’s going to be a rally at the Centre from 2 til 4 this afternoon, on Rabbit Hill Road.

****************
-A lot of people are wondering what’s going on with Westmount Shopping Centre, as several business owners in the place were recently given notice to move out.
There aren’t a lot of shops in the mall to begin with, as much of it now houses medical clinics, but a few of the shops have been there for decades.
And no one really seems to know why they’ve been told to leave.
The mall has been around since 1955.

*****************
-A man who survived a Singapore Airlines flight that was recently rocked by severe turbulence says he feels lucky he only wound up with minor injuries.
A 73-year old British man died from what appears to be a heart attack, while 20 people wound up in the ICU, after the plane suddenly dropped about 6-thousand feet.
Passengers and crew members were tossed like ragdolls around the cabin.
Doctors say many of the injured are going to need spinal surgery.

*******************
-Yoga classes in Spencer, Massachussetts have been selling out, with dozens of people driving hours so they can take part in Piglet Yoga.
Wilbur, Charlotte and Bluey get to play amongst the people while they’re going through their stretching and posing.
Sometimes the pigs sniff the guests, give them a gentle nibble, snuggle up to them or even climb on them and go to sleep.
One woman who attended the class says she would have been happy to forgo the yoga and just go “all piglet.”

******************
-With the Oilers playing Dallas in the Western Conference Final, the leaders of Alberta and Texas are putting beef on the line in a friendly wager.
Premier Danielle Smith says if the Oilers beat the Stars, Governor Greg Abbott has to eat an Alberta rib-steak while being recorded, and he has to explain how amazing it is.
And she says if things go the other way, she’ll do the same with a Texas ribeye.
Abbott says she’s on.

*********************
-Action is supposed to get underway at 6:30 this evening as the Oilers face the Stars in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.
The last time the Oilers made it to the third round was in 2022 and then they were swept by the Avalanche.
