Edmonton’s police chief called it an unthinkable and horrific tragedy. Two young constables were shot dead early Thursday morning inside an apartment building in north Edmonton. It’s believed 35 year old constable Travis Jordan and 30 year old constable Brett Ryan were responding to a report of domestic violence. As they approached the suite, shots rang out and both officers were hit. At this point it appears neither of them had a chance to respond. The young man who was considered a suspect died from a self inflicted gunshot wound and the woman inside the apartment who phoned in the complaint remains in hospital with life threatening injuries.
Condolences poured in from across the nation and flags at the legislature were lowered to half mast in honour of the two officers who were killed in the line of duty. Prime Minister Trudeau said these tragic deaths are a reminder that police officers put themselves in harm’s way everyday to keep people safe.
