-Some better news from crews that have been battling the wildfires around Kelowna, as fire Chiefs said yesterday “things were finally looking better.”
Several homes and cabins have been destroyed, but the fire itself isn’t as extreme as it had been on Friday.
Some of those crew members were battling for 36 to 48-hours, trying desperately to save neighbourhoods.

-In the meantime, tourism is on hold in the central Okanagan, as the Premier has imposed a travel ban to the region.
That ban will be in place til at least September 4th, because officials want to make sure there’s room in hotels and other accommodations for evacuees and fire crews.

-Over in the Northwest Territories,the Yellowknife region wound up with some cooler, damper weather over the weekend, which helped in the battle to keep the blaze from reaching the city.
Fire officials say things are looking okay for a couple of days for the capital, but fires are still very close to Hay River and Fort Smith.
More soldiers are heading to Hay River to help in the fight there.

-In the meantime, anyone who’s been evacuated and has lost their job is being encouraged to apply for E-I right away.
Records of employment won’t be necessary, as applications will be prioritized based on postal codes.
And people can use the mailing address of a friend, family member or even the shelter they may be at in their submission.

-There’s going to be a lot to clean up this week in southern California, after Tropical Storm Hilary passed through.
There’s been a lot of flooding and mudslides, not to mention downed trees and power-lines.
Dodgers Stadium was completely surrounded by floodwaters, while Death Valley has several churning rivers because of flash floods.
The L-A region was also hit by a moderate earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.1.

A number of people were hurt during a fight Saturday between two groups at an Edmonton festival to celebrate the East African country of Eritrea.
The festival had been scheduled to take place around 95th Avenue and 163rd Street, but police and the city of Edmonton pulled the permit when rising tensions between groups became evident.
The scrap broke out, after organizers had moved it to 132nd Avenue and 113-A Street.
At least eleven people were hurt after being hit with sticks.
Protesters say they showed up to speak against the country’s government.
