CFCW’s “Calves for Cancer” week may be over—-but the counting isn’t.
More than 70 calves have been donated so far to help raise money for the Cross Cancer Institute—so at this point—-168-thousand dollars has been raised for their programs.
Our Jackie-Rae says what made it even more fun—is that reps from the Cross were along for the ride this week:
“They were all city kids–they didn’t understand what the heck was going on… All they knew was—“how much did we just raise?”—“oh well we just raised 26-thousand dollars”—and her eyes got really big. So the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Cross Cancer Institute—are amazed at what’s just happened.”
“And if I could give a shout out to the producers who donated–YOU are the ones that have made this a success. And also to all the auction marts that took part—because they waived their commission. It’s a busy sale season–so for them to stop their program so they could do the Calves for Cancer—was a huge ask. And they did not hesitate. So thank you to all the auction marts as well.”
“It wasn’t just calves that were donated. It was actually pretty funny—we also had one puppy donated—he went for $350. There was a pregnant ewe–and she went for $450. And I understand there may be a bison going to market as well.”
More farmers will be taking their calves to market in the weeks to come—so we’re going to be adding to that overall total. We’ll keep you posted.
