RCMP in Strathcona County have now confirmed one person was killed—after a car blew up in the parkade at the Strathcona County Community Centre last night.
Mounties now say a fire had been reported at the building around 6:30pm. When they investigated—they realized there had been an explosion in the parkade—and a suspicious man in a vehicle in that structure.
He was taken to the hospital—where he later died.
Police say they aren’t looking for another suspect—and this man’s name is not being released.
They did not say anything about a possible motive.
Because there had been an explosion–the bomb squad and the RCMP Emergency Response team were called in.
Almost 2 hours after the first blast—there was another explosion in the parkade—while police were on site.
Even though they weren’t far from the blast site–fortunately they weren’t hurt.
RCMP say they are looking into the cause of the second explosion.
At this point—they don’t believe there is further danger—but the region is going to remain closed to the public until everything is confirmed.
That includes the bomb unit remaining on site.
There were a number of vehicles in the parkade when all of this happened–and police say if you own one of them—leave your contact information with Strathcona County—by calling 780-417-7100.
