Things got a little scrappy during a phone call on tariffs between the Prime Minister and U-S President Donald Trump.
Justin Trudeau wanted to know why Trump was using “national security” to justify the tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum—–and Trump apparently said to him—–“Didnt you guys burn down the White House”?
Just to put matters straight—-British troops did that–during the War of 1812.
And it was payback for the American attack on York, Ontario—in territory that EVENTUALLY became Canada.
Catherine Rampell is a CNN political commentator….and says its hard to make heads or tails of what the strategy is in this matter:
“Seems that Trump just has this vague sense that if we punish other countries sufficiently, then they’ll come grovelling to us—and take whatever trade terms we impose upon them. Of course–he’s not really thinking several steps ahead—including what this means for US manufacturing. There are a lot of American companies that depend on inputs of steel and aluminum—and if you raise the price of those inputs–its going to potentially put a lot of people out of work in the United States.”
