Officials still aren’t confirming the number of casualties from this morning’s derailment of an Amtrak train, south of Seattle. However a state trooper told reporters this afternoon, several dozen people were taken to area hospitals with various injuries. At least half a dozen vehicles on the highway were also impacted by the derailment, including two semis. Officials are retrieving the train’s black boxes to try and find out exactly what happened.
Also the president of Amtrak confirmed this afternoon, the Positive Train Control system, that would slow the train automatically if it was travelling too quickly on a particular stretch of track, was not activated on the train that derailed this morning.
We’re now being told several people have been killed—after an Amtrak train went off the tracks and crashed onto a busy interstate below in Washington State.
It was heading from Seattle to Portland—when it went off the rails near Dupont…..
At least two of the train cars fell onto the highway below….
Officials say there were 75 people onboard the train at the time.
One passenger who escaped the wreckage says it felt like they were going around a curve—when the train started rocking and creaking—-and then it felt like they were heading down a hill…
Then everyone slammed into the front of their seats—-windows broke——-and water was gushing everywhere.
