The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, is lobbying the province for another tool to deter speeders. EPS Chief Rod Knecht says the association has approved a resolution calling for the power to seize the vehicles of speeders caught doing more than 50 K over the limit.

"Our focus in not on Mom & Pop speeding a little bit.  Our focus is on those prolific offenders that are going extreme speeds...that are putting themselves in danger or are putting other people who are sharing the road at danger."

If the province gives the OK, vehicles would be seized for 7 days, and the driver’s license would be suspended for that time period as well. Police say the seizures would not be mandatory, but would be up to the discretion of the officer at the scene.

UPDATE:  Not long after police held their news conference, Justice Minister Jonathan Denis tweeted that he did not support the seizure idea.

On the heels of a report that shows the number of body rub parlours in Edmonton has doubled to around 40 in the last 7 years, the city is looking to temporarily put the brakes on the industry.
Mayor Stephen Mandel’s motion for a 7 month moratorium on any new massage parlour licenses was passed by executive committee.

"We have enough. There's no sense adding more until we get a handle on who's there, why they're there and can we help them."

Kate Quinn, the chair of the “Edmonton Sexual Exploitation working group” says the moratorium will give a task force time to get at the underlying issues of the local body rub industry.

"We need to make sure that no one is being hurt or harmed in anything that the city of Edmonton licenses."

If council passes the committee's recommendation next week, the moratorium would be in effect till the end of January.
