There was some scrapping in the Leg this week—which prompted a call about whether or not the term “mansplaining” is unparliamentary.
It started when Alberta Party leader Greg Clark asked the Premier a question:
“It is amazing that I have to ask this question, but do you know–that there is a significant environmental benefit to building a pipeline to tidewater–because it reduces overall global carbon emissions, by displacing higher carbon crude from places like Venezuela and Nigeria?
PREMIER NOTLEY: “Thank you very much Mr. Speaker–and to the opposite speaker for the mansplaining opportunity—let me just say that I am quite familiar with the file….”
Clark didnt laugh—-told the room he thought the term should be declared unparliamentary because it accused him of sexism.
Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley says sexism thats polite–is still sexism.
In the end—the Speaker of the House said its not unparliamentary—but asked everyone to watch their tone from now on.
